Frequently Asked Questions

Competition details, eligibility and event processes in one place.

No. Once registration has closed, no further entries will be accepted.

Competitors may withdraw, change or merge divisions themselves before the published Check, Change & Withdraw deadline. After that deadline, changes and withdrawals are closed. Division changes must be made through the event registration platform, and no changes can be made on competition day.

No. Groin guards are not permitted in competition.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a contact sport, so competitors should have suitable training experience and their instructor's confidence before entering. Your instructor is the best person to advise whether you are ready to compete.

Membership requirements may vary by event. Please review the event listing and registration instructions before entering, and contact ABJJA if you are unsure.

  • Kids may compete in one division, unless No-Gi is available, in which case they may enter two divisions.
  • Juveniles may compete in up to four divisions: Gi and No-Gi juvenile divisions, plus either Gi and No-Gi juvenile open weight or Gi and No-Gi adult weight divisions where eligible.
  • Adults and Masters may compete in up to four divisions: Gi and No-Gi weight divisions, plus Gi and No-Gi open weight divisions where available.

Always ask your instructor for advice before registering. They can help you choose the correct age, belt, weight and experience division and avoid registration issues.

Refund and credit options depend on the event deadlines. Competitors who withdraw before the early bird deadline may be eligible for a refund. Competitors who withdraw before the Check, Change & Withdraw deadline may be eligible for event credit. Requests must be made before the published deadline closes.

Athletes who have proven black belt experience in judo, proven wrestling experience, Olympic or Greco-Roman wrestling experience, or professional MMA experience cannot compete as white belts.

All allowances are already included in the listed weight categories. It is the competitor's responsibility to be on or under the required limit when called. There are no further weight allowances. Athletes who exceed their weight limit may be disqualified, forfeit their entry fee, and have no placing recorded.

ABJJA competitions have first aid or medical staff available to attend injuries and assess each situation as required. Because Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a contact sport, competitors should consider private health insurance and income protection insurance.

Adult athletes may be given the option to remain and medal or to have their division merged under the event merging policy. If you choose to merge and no suitable division is available, you may be eligible for a refund. If you choose to remain and medal, it is your responsibility to move your registration before the Check, Change & Withdraw deadline if you want to seek a match.

Uniform requirements follow the IBJJF regulations unless the event page states otherwise. Competitors should review the ABJJA rules page and the event listing before competition day.
